We have frequently pioneered telecoms technologies, and are seen as leaders in converged networks and services. Manx Telecom was one of the first operators in the world to offer broadband ADSL services to customers. In 2001, we became the first company in Europe to launch a live 3G network, and in November 2005 we became the world’s first company to offer a HSDPA (3.5G) service. We remain the only network operator currently able to offer mobile broadband over a 3G/HSDPA network. More recently, our investments in FTTC (fibre to the cabinet) has ensured 100% broadband coverage to all lines on the Island, which currently experiences higher average broadband speeds than the UK.
Investment
Manx Telecom has invested more than £50 million over the last five years in the development of a world-class telecommunications network, and is committed to making further significant investment in the coming years.
We have invested over £25 million designing and building a Next Generation Network (NGN) the digital backbone for the Island’s future development. Based on Internet Protocol (IP), the NGN enables Manx Telecom to offer its personal and business customers on the Isle of Man the ability to access and manipulate voice, data, television, and video, on one seamless converged network – the first community in the world to be able to do so.
Manx Telecom has made winning and retaining eBusiness a priority, and has invested over £15 million in a purpose built Data Centre at Douglas North which provides world class standards of data security, super fast and highly resilient connectivity, and expandable hosting capacity. The only purpose built Data Centre on the Isle of Man, Douglas North can offer a variety of solutions, from business continuity, simple co-location, fully managed outsourced hosting platforms, to full eCommerce platforms for companies of any size. The Data Centre’s clients currently include companies in a wide variety of eBusiness sectors, including eGovernment, eFinance, eMoney, eGaming, eMusic, and eTravel.
We have also invested in quadruple connections from the Island, via four separate undersea fibre optic circuits, which connect through the UK and Ireland into the main international data hubs. In addition to greater resilience, the enhanced capacity of these circuits is considerable as the technology used within this network is extremely scalable and is capable of delivering more and more capacity as the Island’s success as an eBusiness economy continues to gain momentum.
